Claymaster Firearms LLC: Equipping Southern Illinois for Sport and Safety
Claymaster Firearms is a veteran-owned firearms and ammunition retailer in Carbondale, Illinois, offering more than just gear. In addition to sales, the business provides in-house gunsmithing, trapshooting lessons, non-lethal defense options, and custom ammunition manufacturing. With a strong focus on quality, safety, and service, Claymaster Firearms proudly supports local hunters, sport shooters, and first-time firearm owners alike. Whether you're a seasoned marksman or just getting started, Claymaster Firearms' knowledgeable staff is ready to help customers find the right equipment for their needs.
Owner Matthew Huff had long envisioned opening his own store but wasn’t sure how to bring the idea to life. A friend pointed him toward the Illinois Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at SIU, and he decided to take the first step. He enrolled in the Carbondale Accelerator Program, a 10-week course that helps entrepreneurs build and launch their businesses. The program covers key topics like business registration, financial planning, marketing, and building a strong brand and web presence.
Matthew worked closely with SBDC advisors Michael Jessup and Melissa Ray Roach throughout the program to refine his business model and prepare a comprehensive pitch. As a graduate, he also received $1,250 in startup funding to help bring Claymaster Firearms to market.
“It was incredible,” Matthew said. “The information I got [from the SBDC] was more than I could have asked for. It helped me realize the big picture and focus on the future of the business—not just the start-up phase. Being able to come up with realistic business plans and explore different scenarios gave me a solid foundation to grow from.”
Matthew also credits his military service with shaping his approach as an entrepreneur. “My military background has allowed me to think more strategically to accomplish my goals in the long term instead of trying to brute-force success. Strong communication skills have also helped me build strong relationships with other businesses and customers alike.”
With Claymaster Firearms LLC now open, Matthew is already thinking ahead. His long-term vision includes adding a full-service gun range and eventually launching a firearms and ammunition manufacturing operation—making Claymaster Firearms a one-stop shop for sport and safety in Southern Illinois.
