Heidbreder Utility Mapping and Consulting, founded by Alex Heidbreder, is a specialized service provider dedicated to improving the operational efficiency, safety, and sustainability of small and rural water utilities. The business offers high-quality GIS- and GPS-based mapping services, paired with practical consulting solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced by smaller water districts.
Alex launched his business with the goal of building long-term financial stability for himself and his family, coupled with a desire for greater autonomy in his work and flexibility to pursue personal interests.
His inspiration stemmed from firsthand knowledge of the challenges rural water systems face nationwide, including outdated records, staffing constraints, and limited access to modern digital mapping tools. Alex understands that accurate utility mapping is critical to protecting infrastructure and public safety, and through his work, he equips water utility employees with the tools and knowledge needed for preventive maintenance and long-term system management.
To help turn his vision into a viable business, Alex sought guidance from the Illinois SBDC at SIU. With advisor support, he navigated the steps required to start a business and was encouraged to participate in the Southern Illinois Business Plan Competition powered by Regions. Through advisor-led workshops, he gained valuable insight into developing a clear business plan and realistic financial projections.
Alex’s preparation and planning paid off when he earned first place at the local competition, receiving $1,000 in prize funding to reinvest in his business. Looking ahead, his goal is to help local communities continue to access clean, safe drinking water by strengthening their understanding and long-term management of critical water infrastructure.
