Salon Freedom: Empowering Beauty Professionals to Build Thriving Businesses
After more than 20 years in the beauty industry, including 13 years as a successful salon owner, Sarah Garcia realized her passion had evolved. While she loved serving clients behind the chair, she discovered an even greater calling: helping other beauty professionals build profitable businesses and lasting financial freedom.
That realization came after Sarah began hosting educational events for cosmetologists. Seeing hundreds of professionals learn, connect, and leave inspired showed her she could make an even greater impact by helping salon owners develop the business skills needed to thrive. Through Salon Freedom, she now coaches cosmetology professionals on leadership, recruitment, profitability, and sustainable growth. In addition to her extensive industry experience, Sarah serves on the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) Board, giving her a unique perspective on the beauty industry and its evolving needs.
Having owned a salon in a town of just 4,000 people, Sarah understands the unique challenges facing beauty professionals in smaller communities. She saw talented salon owners struggle with pricing, leadership, and profitability while feeling disconnected from the education and support often available only in larger cities. Salon Freedom was created to change that by providing practical business education and a supportive community for professionals in rural markets.
When Sarah decided to transition from salon owner to industry consultant, she turned to the Illinois Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Southern Illinois University for guidance. Advisors helped her better understand the value of her salon before selling the business, giving her confidence throughout the transition. As she launched Salon Freedom, the SBDC also helped her refine her business concept, strengthen her brand voice, and provide feedback on her website and search engine optimization.
To better understand the needs of her future clients, the SBDC assisted Sarah in developing a market research survey for beauty professionals. The feedback identified common challenges facing salon owners and beauty practitioners and helped shape Salon Freedom's educational offerings and product development.
As the business continued to grow, the SBDC provided guidance on planning Sarah's first professional development retreat, including venue selection, contract negotiations, marketing strategies, and registration management. Advisors also encouraged her to think beyond her local market.
"The SBDC helped me see that my business did not have to stay limited to one salon or even one state," Sarah said. "Their support helped me open my vision for Salon Freedom and expand beyond Illinois."
Today, Salon Freedom offers continuing education, business coaching, retreats, consulting, online courses, and community-building opportunities for beauty professionals. Sarah is now licensed or approved to provide continuing education in Illinois, Missouri, Florida, Iowa, and Texas. What began as one salon has evolved into a growing business dedicated to helping beauty professionals build profitable careers and stronger businesses across multiple states.
Looking ahead, Sarah plans to launch Salon Freedom Collective, an online membership community designed specifically for salon owners in rural markets. The platform will provide education, accountability, marketing resources, pricing strategies, leadership development, and a supportive network to help beauty professionals grow with confidence. Sarah's vision extends beyond helping salon owners increase revenue. She hopes every client leaves with greater confidence, a clear plan for growth, and the reassurance that they don't have to build their business alone.
